TEMPLE BAR
A classic. So what, if it’s touristy?
It’s fun! Lean into it! Share a table, meet your neighbors, grab a bite, and sing at the top of your lungs!
HOP ON HOP OFF BUS TOUR
The HOHO is by far the best way to see it all in a short period of time! Usually we wouldn’t recommend this “touristy activity”. But this really is the best way to see Dublin, and learn some history along the way! With these big red busses (some are green in Dublin), you get to take a tour of the city, at your own pace. Some even come with a free pint of beer at the Guinness Storehouse!
To sign up for on of these big red busses, simply choose which company you want to go with online, or stumble across one on the street and purchase your ticket(s)! If you’re on the street, simply scan the QR code for the bus at any of the many stops around the city, sign up, and hop on! Naturally, we chose the Big Bus Tour’s BBD service, or Big Bus Dublin, and had a great time.
TIPS AND TIPS
Did you know?
The first time you hop on, you will need to get a physical, validated ticket with a code from the bus driver. Once you receive the code, take a picture of it with your phone. If you lose the paper, this will work as a backup.
Most importantly, bring some change or cash to tip your drivers! They’re driving you around the city all day, teaching you its history, and cracking jokes along the way. They are well worth an extra euro or two to show your appreciation!
DAY TRIPS
BUS TOUR
Glendalough Valley, The Wicklow Mountains, Kilkenny, and a Working Sheep Dog Demonstration
This was one of our favorite things we did in Dublin besides the HOHO Bus Tour. We were able to find a last minute, +9 hour tour for under $30/person! We thought the working sheep dog demonstration would be our least favorite of the activities. But, it ended up being one of our favorites!
RENT A CAR
While, we did rent a car in Ireland, one thing we wish we did a bit more of is driving around the Dublin area. We’ll just have to go back on our next visit to the Emerald Isle! You could easily make your own self-guided tour of the countryside.
If you have not driven “on the opposite side of the road” before, you will need practice. Make sure to set aside an hour for the driver to practice in the parking lot and get used to the feel of it. If you are not a confident driver. We recommend taking a tour instead.
BITES
Jay Kay’s
Delicious little breakfast and lunch spot in a modern, fun to wander area.
Temple Bar
Grab some pizza or other bar food and share a table with some travelers. Drink some beer and sing your herts out. With live music and shenanigans covering the walls. The Temple Bar gives you that ultimate, packed Irish bar feel.
Fish and Chips
We couldn’t Bring up Ireland without one of its most well-known dishes. We had both had fish and chips before, but never in Ireland. Let us tell you, if you don’t like fish and chips, you will in Ireland!
TRAVEL ADVICE
WHERE TO STAY
Near the river and Temple Bar. Just be careful staying near Temple Bar and being out at night alone. Like any big city, just be aware of your surroundings and don’t go walking in any dark alleys alone.
GETTING AROUND
Walking, The HOHO Bus, taxis, free now (their uber), trains, car rental
SHOPPING
When we made our impromptu trip to Dublin in the end of September 2024, we had planned on going to Italy. Our plans changed, we spun the globe, and Ireland is where we landed! However, we had packed for Sardinia and had nearly zero warm clothing. So, off we went to get some coats and layers.
Luckily, Dublin is a modern city with plenty of options. We found our favorite area to shop was the ILAC shopping center. While, The Westbury Mall is also a good option.
GOT LAUNDRY?
We dropped off our laundry at a small laundry service store, Temple Bar Laundry. I was even too early checking in to our rental. So, they let me sit downstairs and chat with them for over an hour while I waited! They were kind, prompt, and we highly recommend using their service.
There are also a multitude of laundromats if you would rather do it yourself. But we find, this cuts into our travel time. So, usually prefer to leave our laundry with others when we travel.
NEED TO CHECK YOUR BAG FOR THE DAY?
You can do so at both Connolly and Heuston Train Stations. Or, do what we did and look up a nearby hostel! Often times, they will have a bag check option for the day. We checked our bags at Abbey Court Hostel. Which looked like a great hostel, in a great location. If you’re looking for a cheaper stay, check them out!
