View of the ancient walls of Dubrovnik and the sea

DUBROVNIK

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

BEST TIME TO VISIT

MAY – SEPTEMBER

We recommend early to mid September for optimal weather and crowds.

CURRENCY

EUROS

Since 2023, the Croatian currency has been changed. From the Kuna to the Euro.

GETTING THERE

FLY INTO DBV

Dubrovnik International Airport

TAXI OR UBER

The airport is small and easy to navigate. Just call an uber or hail a taxi when you step outside. Dubrovnik is only 20 minutes away!

GETTING AROUND

OLD TOWN | WALKING

There are no outside vehicles allowed inside the walls of Old Town Dubrovnik. Walking is the way to go.

If you decide to walk along the city’s ancient wall, or do any exploring off Stradun, the main street in Old Town Dubrovnik, you’re going to need some supportive shoes with thick soles. The elevation changes around the city are drastic.

We suggest checking out a topographic map of the city. But, it’s safe to assume that generally, if you’re wandering more than 30 feet off the main street of Stradun, you’re already starting to trek up the city stairs.

You’ll inevitably break out a sweat on a summer day. But wandering the streets and wall. Taking in the looming architecture and surrounding sights are well worth it.

TAXIS AND UBER

Run everywhere outside Old Town Dubrovnik and are a relatively affordable option.

BUSSES AND FERRIES

Busses and Ferries are available for longer distances.

WHERE TO STAY

OLD TOWN

The vibes are immaculate. But, mind the drastic elevation changes!

The Hilton

Just outside the Pile Gate, this luxurious hotel is in the perfect location for your stay in Dubrovnik!

FOOD

You know the food that makes you close your eyes and do a little dance? That’s Croatian food.

From the moment we tasted it, Croatian food cemented itself at the top of our list. Every dish we had was salivating.

PASTA

PASTRIES

SEAFOOD

SEAFOOD RISOTTO

SQUID INK RISOTTO

RESTAURANTS

Here are some of our favorite restaurants from our stay.

INSIDE OLD TOWN

DUBRAVKA 1836

Great for view of Lovrijenac (The Red Keep, for any Game of Thrones fans out there) and the water. Located right outside of Pile gate, A great view and spot for apps and local wine.

KONOBA AQUARIUS

locally owned “hole in the wall” restaurant. Gorgeous “garden” area seating. The owner also owned the airbnb we stayed in and was an amazing host! This restaurant had our favorite aesthetic

OUTSIDE OLD TOWN

BANJE BEACH BAR

A rocky beach with bar outside the Ploce gate with view of water and Dubrovnik harbor.

Great for day drinking, sun bathing, or taking a quick dip!

PANORAMA RESTAURANT

Gorgeous view. White tablecloth. You will most likely need a reservation.

Honestly, we had mixed reviews at our table about the food back in 2020. But the restaurant itself, the service, and the view were worth a return trip

You can buy a ticket and take the gondola up to it (check the hours!!), hike up for free, or take a taxi. Taxis will stop at a viewpoint so you can get great photos!

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT “IN” DUBROVNIK!

#1 RESTAURANT AND HIDDEN GEM:

– KING KONOBA –

On our last night in Croatia, we decided not to spend the night in Old Town for a second time, and opted to rent an airbnb a bit closer to the airport instead. Which is where we stumbled upon this hidden gem, King Konoba Restaurant.

We were already raving about the food from our trip. How we thought we loved food from other countries. But, Croatia had already “taken the cake.” Then we ate here.

This charming, family owned and operated restaurant had the best food of our entire trip. The owner cooked at the open faced grill with his granddaughter on his shoulder.

He and his family paid special attention to each table and you really felt connected to the place. Then you taste the food.

There’s no hiding it, we were gluttonous. We shared a show-stopping share-plate of fresh seafood, fit for a king (and probably more like 4-6 people than 2). Eat slow and enjoy. This is a true, Croatian family vibe.

ON A BUDGET?

EATING AT “HOME”

One of the easiest ways to stay on budget, is by cutting back on eating out. Yes, even on vacation. If you’re staying in a city for a few days, it’s easy to stop by and grab some basics for a few meals at home.

Don’t forget ABOUT boxes/doggie bags! It’s not a faux pas to ask for a box or foil. We did it all over Croatia!

Save that leftover risotto, pizza, pasta, etc. for lunch the next day. Just make sure you can get it to a refrigerator before it gets the chance to get to an unsafe temperature.

CAFE BREAKFAST

Sitting in Cafe chairs and people watching in a plaza is one of my favorite things to do in Croatia, and really, all over Europe.

Pop over to a traditional Croatian cafe for a coffee and a breakfast pastry. We found small, reasonably priced cafes all over Croatia!

STREET VENDORS

Know your art prints! They make really good prints in Europe and will tell you anything to sell them. “I made this in art school!” or “My son made this!” are common lines. If you care, check the work yourself to see if its original.

ART BOUTIQUES

Our favorite was just inside the Ploce Gate. Tiny art boutique with gorgeous works of art. Paintings, carvings etc.

TRAVEL ADVICE

TOURIST PASS

Buy the Pass to walk the wall AND get museum entry, it’s only a few dollars more than just walking the wall alone when they’re bundled. Buy them at the entrance to The Wall before exiting the Pile Gate.
